About Me

Hi, I am Juan Diego

I am a Ph.D. student in Statistics and Applied Probability at UC Santa Barbara. My research focuses on applying statistical methods, machine learning algorithms and stochastic processes’ theory to solve complex problems in high-frequency trading and actuarial science.

Back in 2020, I was appointed to the COVID response team of Bogotá. My primary responsibilities included developing the epidemiological model for the city, computing the effective number of reproduction and forecasting the short-term intensive care unit occupancy. In 2021 and 2022, I was a Research Associate at Santa Barbara Actuaries Inc., where I helped to develop a proposal for a condition-based risk adjustment system for the country of Colombia and a model to determine the main factors driving enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans.

I enjoy learning, teaching and helping others to make sense of data. I am currently appointed as a Teaching Assistant in Dr. Feldman’s class on Probability and Stochastic Processes (PSTAT 213B) and I mentor students interested in research in actuarial science and mathematical finance. In case you are interested in working with me, please reach out through LinkedIn; I look forward to hearing from you.
